Elkins ending career in record-breaking fashion
It’s been a special week for KC Elkins.
The 5-foot-6 senior guard from West Jefferson celebrated Senior Day in record-breaking fashion with 10 3-pointers in the women’s basketball team’s 101-80 victory against Valparaiso on Saturday.
Elkins went 10 of 14 from beyond the arc and finished with a career-high 37 points. The 10 treys broke the previous school record of eight, which was set by Maria Bennett on Jan. 8, 2011, also against Valpo.
The 10 3-pointers also tied the Horizon League record and helped the Raiders equal their team record of 15, set during the 2011-12 season against Illinois-Chicago and Cleveland State.
Elkins’ 37 points are the most by a Horizon League player this season. She also had four assists and four steals while going 3 of 3 from the free-throw line in her final regular-season game at the Nutter Center.
Two days later, she earned her first Horizon League Player of the Week honor.
She finished the regular season sixth in the league in steals (1.8 per game), 12th in 3-point percentage (35.2) and 15th in 3-pointers made per game (1.6).
Wednesday night Elkins contributed seven points, five rebounds and a steal as the second-seeded Raiders beat No. 7 Wisconsin-Milwaukee 73-64 in the HL tournament quarterfinals.
The game was the 122nd of Elkins’ career, tying her with Molly Fox for most in program history. She should become the sole leader tonight at Green Bay when the Raiders face No. 3 Youngstown State in a 7 p.m. semifinal.
Baseball: Freshman catcher Sean Murphy hit .583 while leading WSU to a 3-1 record last week, earning him HL Batter of the Week honors.
The Centerville graduate was 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and a run in an 8-4 victory against Dayton last Friday, and the following day he went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, RBI and two runs in a 9-7 triumph over Bradley.
Murphy wrapped the weekend by going 2 for 2 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base in a 13-1 thrashing of UD on Sunday.
The hot streak upped Murphy’s batting average to .292. He has nine RBIs, four doubles and eight runs for the Raiders, who are 6-9 heading into today’s opener of a three-game series against Illinois-Chicago at Nischwitz Stadium.
Softball: The Raiders recorded their first non-league win of the season Sunday with a 6-5 triumph over Marist at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational at Rock Hill, N.C.
Jess Gorman homered and doubled for WSU, while Becka Peterson, Taylor Knore and Kristi Boreing also had multi-hit games. Krystian DeWitt picked up her first win on the mound, and Montana Wear recorded her first save.
The Raiders (2-13) travel to Athens to face Ohio University today before heading to Bloomington, Ind., to play four games in the Hoosier Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
