Small Talk: Letters and Chatter about Columbus Monthly

You're the Tops

We asked readers to share their favorite memories and photos of good times at The Top Steak House, which turns 60 years old this month. A few of our favorites:

"My husband has been visiting The Top since he was a kid and brought me here on one of our first dates, back when we were 'just friends.' We used to love to sit at Nancy's table, and now our favorite server is Emily. Jean, Denver and the rest of the staff are just as wonderful as the food and both keep bringing us back time and time again. We look forward to carrying on the tradition and passing our love for the greatest steakhouse we have ever found on to our own children. Thanks, guys!" -Amy Moore

"My husband and I have been visiting The Top since I was pregnant with our youngest child. For her 17th birthday, we decided to show her why we return for special occasions. She was not disappointed. I absolutely love this place, and the staff has always had such excellent service. My No. 1 spot in Columbus!" -Tonya Wade

"Growing up, The Top meant special occasion in my family. Birthdays, graduations, random happy events-all were celebrated in the moody, elegantly chic restaurant. My little sister and I would always (and still do) order a Shirley Temple. To this day, it remains my favorite place for a steak and a dinner with family." -Samantha Cardenas

"I was introduced to The Top when visiting colleges with my son in Ohio. It was a hit with us and now have returned whenever we are in town. A gem of a place, don't change a thing." -David Flamer

"Best martinis, as well as the steaks! And it always feels like Bogey should come strolling through the front doors with Bacall on his arm! Keep up the great food and service for at least another 60 years!" -Sharon Patterson

On a Mission

Michelle Sullivan's feature about Faith Mission ("Home for Now," February 2015) was warmly received by folks who appreciate the organization's dedication to helping homeless people in Columbus. "What a great article," Jeannine Turner Park wrote. "It doesn't even begin to cover the care and compassion that Faith Mission has for the homeless, especially Sue Villilo. It's a wonderful organization." And Faith Mission commented on the story on our Facebook page, writing, "Thank you for highlighting us and the people we serve. This is a great article, and the images are very striking."

Big Ideas

Reader Mavid McPeck liked our ideas for making some forlorn blocks of Downtown more lively ("Think Big!," February 2015). "Please, please can we work on some of these ideas? Also, it would be nice to bring the Santa Maria back Downtown and make it a tourist attraction like Chicago's Bean at Millennium Park. Think if the Santa Maria had a bar/restaurant in it for people to post pics of. Tourists would travel from all over the world to experience the nightlife of Downtown."
