First Look: W Nail Bar Brings a New Mani/Pedi to Short North

When you book your next mani/pedi at The W Nail Bar, you're in for more than a pretty polish-get ready for an experience.

"This needs to be romantic and enjoyable," says Amanda Mason, co-owner of The W, the new Short North nail salon. "Let's take care of you."

Mason and her sister, Lauren Hunter, co-own the salon, which they opened officially on April 18.

The W's services are simple, but luxurious, with a focus on sustainability, quality and cleanliness. Manicures are priced at $30, with gels priced at $35. Pedicures are $45 and are done in a copper bowl, which has natural antibacterial properties, and without jets, a common source of sanitation problems at spas.

Extras, like sugar scrubs, massages, hot towel wraps and pedicure condiments (buttermilk, Epsom salt, chamomile) are included in that price.

"We wanted to create something that isn't here," Hunter says. "The idea is that we offer super competitive prices, and we have the best services."

Guests can try on as many polishes as they want at the bar, a designated area in the salon where nail technicians will apply the colors and remove them for you. They offer Vinylux, OPI and Zoya, a Cleveland-made vegan polish. Wine and cucumber water are offered to each guest.

"We are 100 percent customer service based," Mason says. "You check in and sit down… you don't have to work anymore."

That focus on relaxation is translated in the décor, too-The W is accented with the personality of both sisters. Lavish blue velvet chairs sit next to rustic wooden tables, and local, purchasable art is displayed on the walls. The salon's signature candle, made by their mother's Boston candle company, burns around the clock. (You can buy one if you enjoy the scent-and you will.)

Hunter and Mason also have plans for community collaborations, including free meditation sessions, a men's event featuring treats from Condado, the Rowe Fashion Show and the Jack Roth Fund.

"Giving back is so important to us," Hunter says. "We're going to be heavily engrained in the local community."

The W will be available for private events and does accept walk-ins.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The salon will be closed on Tuesdays.
