Metro Parks' Winter Hike Series will step off Jan. 7

The cold weather makes it tempting to stay inside and be sedentary. But Metro Parks is luring central Ohioans outdoors with its 44th Annual Winter Hike Series, which gets underway this weekend.

The series offers five January hikes of varying lengths at parks throughout the system. All events are free. For more information, go to

Here's the lineup:

Saturday, Jan. 7 –Take a 2- or 4-mile walk through the woods and meadows. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided. Meet at the Ash Grove Picnic Area. 10 a.m. Blacklick Woods Metro Park, 6975 E. Livingston Ave., Reynoldsburg.

Saturday, Jan. 14 –After a 2- or 4-mile hike through fields and forests, partake in hot soup and drinks. Meet at the Maple Grove Picnic Shelter. 10 a.m. Sharon Woods Metro Park, 6911 Cleveland Ave., Westerville.

Sunday, Jan. 15 –Participants can choosea 1-, 3- or 5-mile hike around the lakes, through the prairie and along Big Darby Creek. Meet at Darby Bend Lakes. 2 p.m. Prairie Oaks Metro Park - Darby Bend Lakes, 2755 Amity Road, Hilliard.

Saturday, Jan. 21 –Take a 1- or 2-mile hike along the Greenway and park trails. Food and drinks will follow. Meet at the climbing wall. 10 a.m. Scioto Audubon Metro Park, 400 W. Whittier St., Columbus.

Sunday, Jan. 22 –A guided 2-mile hike will be held along the trails and garden paths. Meet at the Gardens Entrance. 2 p.m. Inniswood Metro Gardens, 940 S. Hempstead Road, Westerville.
