Daily Bulletin: School Lunch Rut
With the school year two-thirds over, are you running out of lunchbox ideas? Nationwide Children’s Hospital wants to help.
Dietitian Kaylee Sprau, who works at the hospital’s Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition, offers the following ideas to liven—and lighten—up your kid’s lunch:
- Homemade “Lunchable” with whole wheat crackers, reduced-fat cheese cubes, turkey pepperoni, cucumbers and grapes.
- Whole-wheat tortilla filled with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and grilled chicken, drizzled with a yogurt-based ranch dressing. Pair it with low-fat milk and an orange.
- Yogurt parfait made with light yogurt and a cup of mixed berries topped with low-fat granola, along with bell peppers and water.
- Whole-wheat crackers topped with tuna or chicken salad made with low-fat mayonnaise, accompanied by cucumber slices, a banana and water.
- Low-fat deli ham on whole-wheat bread with sides of low-fat string cheese, apple, carrots and hummus, and water.
- Snack pack: apple slices and celery sticks with peanut butter, a high-protein granola bar and low-fat milk.
