Magazine Extra: Fashion Feature Outtakes

Emma Frankart Henterly
Three of the looks we could hardly bear to leave out.

In every issue, one of the hardest decisions we have to make is which photos will get into the fashion feature on bridal attire. Because the story only gets 12 to 14 pages, we have to be discerning in our selections; they have to both showcase the gown (or pantsuit) itself, while also being an aesthetically appealing shot that appeals to a wide audience.

Our photographer, Tim Johnson, is almost too good—the process of narrowing down his beautiful images, featuring Elegant Bride gowns at the stunning Ohio Statehouse, was a painstaking one. This issue, there was one photo in particular that the entire staff loved. The ensemble was nontraditional, to say the least; a black lace top with a full gray skirt and a black birdcage veil. But it was the wrong shape—vertical, not horizontal—for the space we needed it to fit. It wasn’t a cover image candidate, and we hesitated about putting a black gown on the table of contents page—what if it alienated our more traditional readers?

Thus, this post was born.

We rounded up that image, along with several other favorites that it killed us to leave out, to share as a web exclusive.
