Real Wedding Wednesdays: Amanda Crawford and Scott Hicks

Abbey Anspach

As a wedding planner, Amanda Hicks has played a part in creating countless nuptials throughout her career. When the time came for her own wedding, Amanda knew she wanted something different.

She delivered. Guests at Amanda and Scott’s event mingled with kangaroos and penguins during cocktail hour at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Adding to the unique experience, the newlyweds opted for nontraditional food stations that offered cuisine from all the places they had lived or loved traveling to.

Even when you’re the wedding planner at your own event, things don’t always go as anticipated. A baby bear got lose the day of the wedding, forcing the whole zoo to go on lockdown. “It made for a bit of a stressful day, but it’s now a great story to share,” says Amanda.

While the wedding was uniquely elaborate, the proposal was perfectly simple. Scott popped the question seven years after they first met as students at Miami University. While in their backyard, he presented Amanda a photo album of all their years together. The last page had a photo of their dog, Honey, on it with a sign that said, “Will you marry my daddy?” A year and a half later, Honey’s parents said, “I do.”
