When it comes to celebrating National Aviation Day on Aug. 19, Central Ohioans have an advantage, thanks to the proximity of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton. Located about 70 miles southwest of Columbus, the free museum offers an amazing array of aviation history.

The facility features more than 360 aerospace vehicles, including planes used by presidents and spacecraft from NASA. Visitors can learn about flight development and military history. The museum, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, has free parking and admission.

Take a quick road trip for special family-oriented aviation day events from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 19. Then pick up some freeze-dried astronaut ice cream at the museum store to complete the celebration. For more information, go to nationalmuseum.af.mil.

National Aviation Day is held on Orville Wright’s birthday, honoring the contributions he and his brother, Wilbur, of Dayton made as pioneers of flight.
