Lessons Learned: Advice from Vanessa Foreman Carter and Matthew Carter

Emma Frankart Henterly

Each issue of our magazine features an advice column of sorts; it’s a Q&A with the newlyweds whose photos appear in the issue. They share tips and advice based on what they learn while planning their own events. Because we can’t possibly share all the great counsel they share in the pages of the magazine, we started this weekly series to pass their wisdom on to you.

Vanessa and Matthew’s wedding took place on March 11, 2017, at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

What are you happy you spent money on?

We were happy with all of our vendors. The Athletic Club of Columbus was incredibly accommodating to all of our requests, the flowers were gorgeous, the music was great and our pictures are beautiful!

What do you think you could have done without in your wedding?

Nothing; we did a great job vetting items and ideas during the process to streamline our special day.

What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?

We were surprised at how many small decisions we had to make throughout the planning process.

Vanessa, any dress shopping advice?

Know what type of silhouette you want before you start trying on dresses.

Matthew, what about menswear?

Go with a bow tie for a clean, classic look!

Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?

1. Keep it simple by streamlining the number of vendors you have! For example, our photographer was also our videographer, our florist also did our cake and the ACC managed everything else from the food, to the bar to the linens, table settings, etc.

2. Consider a first look! We debated at length, but were really glad we did it. We really enjoyed the time with just the two of us!

Do you have any general marriage advice, as a newlywed?

Patience and good communication can solve almost any problem.
