Real Columbus Wedding: Irina and Nicolas Miller

A night that was out of this world

Dec. 17, 2021 | “A night under the stars” was the perfectly executed theme of Irina (Gurchunov) and Nicolas Miller’s wedding, which took place one year ago this week.

The pair met back in 2016 at Southern Tier Brewery in Lakewood, New York, where Irina was enjoying a girls’ weekend and Nic was celebrating a bachelor party. “Our groups started talking, and Nic and I hit it off right away,” Irina says. “We found out that one of my best friends from high school in St. Louis was one of Nic’s friends in college in New York. I called her to make sure she approved, and she did.” The pair dated long-distance for nearly a year, “before I convinced Nic to move to Columbus,” she adds.

Years later, Irina and Nic were driving from Columbus to Buffalo for Christmas. “Nic took a detour and drove to Southern Tier for lunch,” Irina recalls. “I was fully prepared for a proposal, since that’s where we met, but he didn’t do it!” After arriving in Buffalo, Nic took another detour, this time to Niagara Falls. After a lovely dinner and a stroll around the falls, he dropped to one knee and finally delivered the expected proposal. “He definitely had me guessing all day long, but in the end, it was a perfect moment and a nice little trip down memory lane,” Irina says.

The celestial theme came about because Nic is a huge fan of space, Irina says. The motif was incorporated into everything from the invitation suite to the lining of Nic’s jacket to the signage and guest favors.

“It’s hard to narrow in on a specific moment [as the most memorable], as the whole day was absolutely perfect and pretty much exactly as we planned,” Irina says. “It was so great to have all our favorite people in one place, supporting us and celebrating with us. Seeing all our friends and family hanging out together made us really happy. The love and support we felt from everyone around us was the best part.”

The day did see one small snafu, however, during the vow exchange.

“Instead of saying ‘I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you,’ I accidentally said, ‘without you.’ We all busted out laughing,” Irina recalls. “I guess I was a little nervous.”

Musical selections played a big role in the couple’s day. The ceremony processional featured a live rendition of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s cover of “Over the Rainbow,” complete with a ukulele, in homage to Nic’s birthplace—Hawaii. And Irina’s Jewish heritage was honored with a Hora dance at the reception. (Her Russian background also got recognition in her mother’s welcome speech.)

And Irina had a surprise up her sleeve for the reception, too.

“We chose early on not to do a wedding cake for dessert, but since Nic's birthday was two days after our wedding, I surprised him with a Buffalo Bills themed cake,” she says. “They brought it out to the Bills’ theme song, ‘Shout.’ Then I asked all the guests to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to him.”
