Dec. 13 bazaar planned at Horizon Elementary
A Holiday Bazaar will be held for the first time at Horizon Elementary on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Nikki Barren, secretary for the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), said they have held a Winterfest in the past which was exclusive to parents at the school. They would set up tables and have a small business-type affair.
"It didn't seem to do well," she said.
This year, the PTO decided to host a bazaar which is open to the public.
PTO President Lynne Stratton, who is a substitute teacher, made contact with other schools in the district through a shopping line available only to employees of the district.
"We got quite a few responses," said Barren.
About 40 to 50 people contacted her initially about setting up booths to sell some of their crafts, but only about 30 applications were submitted before the cut-off period in late November.
On Dec. 12, she said, the PTO will go in and tape off spaces and label them for the vendors and crafters.
The PTO charges for the available space and then the vendors keep all of the money from their sales.
Funds collected from the sale of the spaces will be used to offset the cost of making playground improvements at the elementary school, according to Barren.
"We do have a playground," she said, "but it is small. We would like to expand it a bit and make it more suitable for the bigger kids."
Barren said the Playground Committee was created earlier this year by physical education teacher Jennifer Rambin.
Music teacher Kelly Litterer will have a group of children at the Holiday Bazaar singing holiday songs.
Barren said they were going to have a bake sale, but the membership baked enough goods to get them through Election Day. She said it was a little too soon to ask them to do more, so they have decided to turn to a vendor who sells individualized packaged items.
Although it was not confirmed as of Dec. 5, she said, she is hoping to obtain the services of a mobile coffee shop.
A gift wrapping station will be set up and manned by parent volunteers. They will charge for small, medium and large items and the ribbon and paper will be included with the price of the wrapping.
