Columbus Parent Profile: Amy Routh

Staff Writer
Columbus Parent

What is the most played song on your iPod right now? I am way behind the times and don't have an iPod but am enjoying playing Those Darlins' "Red Light Love" over and over on my (computer) iTunes.

If you had to be on a reality-TV show, which one would it be? "Project Runway" - but as a judge, not a designer. They are always getting it so wrong in my opinion!

Who is your favorite TV/movie parent? I'll take Pa Ingalls from "Little House on the Prairie," a childhood favorite. He was rugged yet charming, a man's man and a woman's man. Whatever the hardship he always knew what to do, and how to do it, whatever it took to care for the family.

Which superhero power would you like to have? I suppose super-human speed would be the most useful power, so I could zip through my e-mails and sewing to save more time for my family and myself.

Favorite thing to do for cheap family fun in Central Ohio: The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, which is cheap if you are a member. Not only do we always have fun there, but it is a sentimental place for me as well because Adam and I were married there! We also love the Sunday music program in the Park of Roses.

Favorite family restaurant: I am still searching for a replacement for the now-departed hot dog joint Wunderdaug. Best mac 'n' cheese I ever had, and my daughter loved the hot dogs and the books they kept for kids. We miss you, Wunderdaug!

Favorite movie that you saw with your daughter: Charlotte's first movie theater experience was "Princess & the Frog." It was so thrilling to see her all wide-eyed and mesmerized by the huge screen. I loved the movie because it was set in New Orleans, my favorite city, with all its great music.

Favorite way to spend a Saturday afternoon: It probably involves a blanket in a park, under a tree, with my family and a good novel.

Best advice you ever received as a parent: My mom told me to always be consistent. Kids will always call you out on inconsistency, but they can learn best and thrive when they know what to expect.

What's the funniest thing your child ever said or did that you really wish she hadn't said or done? If Charlotte is thirsty she will attempt to drink from any abandoned cup or glass in search of water. So after some regretted mistakes, she has learned to ask one question before drinking a random beverage. No, it's not, "May I have a sip of this?" but rather, "Is this water or wine?" By now most of my family and friends have heard it (most laughing, others not so much). I just hope she doesn't ask her preschool teachers!

My life's motto: Live every week like it's Shark Week!
