Scheduled Deliveries on the Decline

Melissa Kossler Dutton

The March of Dimes advocates for 40-week gestation when possible. Here are some of their reasons why:

  • A baby's brain at 35 weeks weighs only two-thirds of what it will weigh at 40 weeks.
  • In the last six weeks of pregnancy, your baby's brain adds connections needed for balance, coordination, learning and social functioning.
  • Babies born at 40 weeks are less likely to have breathing and feeding problems as infants.
  • Babies born at 40 weeks are less likely to have learning and behavior problems in childhood.
