BUZZ TERM: Birth Order

WHAT IT MEANS: Birth order refers to a child's position in a family structure: firstborn, middle child, last born, etc. Though scientists had previously dismissed research on birth order as inconclusive or flawed, new studies found that a correlation exists between birth order and certain behavioral and personality-related attributes. These recent studies reveal that intelligence and personality may indeed be impacted by the order of birth, especially IQ and one's choice of spouse.

WHERE IT COMES FROM: Besides academic research conducted as far back as the late nineteenth century, contemporary literature includes Dr. Kevin Leman's The New Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are. Leman's book was first published in 1985 and is now in its second and revised, updated edition. The Birth Order Book: What Your Position in the Family Really Tells You About Your Character (by Linda Blair, 2013) is based on 25 years of clinical experience and includes information on the experiences of twins, stepsiblings and only children.
