Actual Coffee tasting and open house

Shelley Mann, Columbus Alive

The March issue of Columbus Monthly (on newsstands now!) is all about our city's coffee roasting scene, which is expanding like crazy. The story got me exploring the various offerings around town, and I wanted to share a favorite: Actual Coffee. It's the roastery branch of the beer company Actual Brewing, headed by Jen Ryan and Jason Montgomery.

Jen and Jason shared a sample of their fresh-roasted coffee beans, sourced from a Guatemalan farm called Finca Cabrejo. It's a nicely balanced brew with some sweet notes, so it's perfect for a morning cup of joe. (And the design geek in me loves their packaging--especially that pretty little peacock.)

And there's a great chance this weekend to try it yourself. The new roastery is holding a tasting event from 1-4 this Saturday at their James Road facility (also where the brewery is location, although no beers will be sampled at this event).

At Saturday's event, the Actual Coffee folks will be serving pour-overs and french press versions of their roasted-in-house South American coffees. If you like what you taste, you'll be able to purchase quarter-pound, half-pound and full-pound bags as well.
