Openings: Kittie's Cakes in German Village

Shelley Mann, Columbus Alive

Funny enough, I haven't been able to try any of the cakes at this adorable new bakery because the inventory was completely wiped out by 3 p.m. Friday, opening day, and every single day since. But there's plenty to admire from a design standpoint. Aesthetics-wise, Kittie's is a standout. The owners, married couple Mollie and Kelly Fankhauser, used to bake cakes out of their German Village apartment before opening this new storefront, previously home to Twig home decor shop.

No detail has been overlooked, from a crisp blue-and-white color scheme that matches the bakery's sharp new logo, to a rolling ladder just like you'd find in an old bookstore, to a tasting room outfitted with a retro space-age chandelier. And somehow, everything feels perfectly natural, as if it's been there forever.

Kittie's specializes in special event cakes and cupcakes, and this new spot offers a rotating selection of cupcakes plus a few new goodies (oatmeal cream pies and biscuits with jam!). Coffee from Portland-based Stumptown rounds out a perfect afternoon treat. Here's the menu:
