Chipotle-style sushi at Fusian

Shelley Mann, Columbus Alive

My first thought after trying my customized spicy tuna roll at Fusian was "these guys are gonna be rich." If you don't know the backstory, Fusian is a fast-casual chainlet (three locations so far) created by two Ohio State grads with an appreciation for budget-minded sushi. The first three locations are on college campuses: University of Dayton, University of Cincinnati and, now, Ohio State at the South Campus Gateway. Not only does this place have a college-friendly, super-slick aesthetic, it also has sushi priced at grocery store prices but that tastes much, much better.

Before checking this place out, I was skeptical of the DIY approach to sushi rolls and wondered about the quality of ingredients priced as low as they are here. But while these rolls may not be as pretty as you'll find elsewhere in town, the quality and quantity is excellent. And I was surprised by how much I enjoyed dictating exactly what would be in my roll. Along with the tuna, I went for asparagus, avocado, cucumber and carrot inside, topped with spicy mayo, sweet soy and tempura crunch -- all for $7.25.

So, yeah, I think the college kids are going to really love this place.
