Bluescreek Farm Meats launches pork app
Today, the popular butcher at the North Market launches its first phone app designed to teach the novice home cook to the veteran chef all they need to know about hogs. After a little more than a month of development, Bluescreek Farm Meats has launched Bluescreek Masters of Meat Pork App.
"The whole app is centered around learning the cuts of a hog," says Bluescreek manager Jamie Smith. Through pictures and videos (of owner David), the app breaks down the hog, allowing users to isolate certain areas of the hog, select cuts of meat and get an idea of the size and shape of each portion. Through video, interactive tips and sound bites, users also can find advice on how to treat and butcher the meat, as well as proper cooking techniques. It's an app designed for use in the kitchen or at the butcher's counter.
Why focus just on the hog? Customer demand, Smith says. Three years ago, when they started butchering-themed classes, topics were more focused on beef. But now, customers prefer to buy pork seven to one at the North Market stand, she says.
"I think people are more interested in learning about pork," she says. Hogs are smaller than cows, which immediately makes it an easier animal to visualize, she says.
The app comes at a time when, Smith says, people are looking engage more with where their meat comes from, and they want to treat it themselves, too. Smoking meat has become a huge interest for their customers.
The app is available starting today on GooglePlay for 99 cents, with availability on iTunes to follow soon. If all goes well, this may not be the last app from Blues Creek Farm.
