New vendors, live entertainment, a VIP lounge and more elbow room will make this year's Apron Gala bigger than ever. The North Market's signature fundraiser where guests don clever aprons takes over the historic market-and now an outdoor pavilion-from 7 to 11 p.m. this Saturday, May 17.

The new, tented pavilion will occupy the outdoor farmers market area, creating a more spacious atmosphere for guests and vendors to mingle at the typically packed event. The band Sons of Gladys and DJ Patrick will perform on an outdoor stage.

"We have expanded a footprint, a little more room to breathe," says North Market executive director Rick Harrison Wolfe, which will help guests better enjoy the real stars of the show. "It's all about the merchants and the food."

The market's 35 merchants will serve one-time-only appetizers, entrees and desserts made just for the Apron Gala. Expect to sip on a refreshing espresso drink made from crushed mint cookie malt balls from A Touch of Earth. Sink your teeth into a decadent roasted asparagus pizza on a warm pretzel crust from Brezel. And enjoy the Southern satisfaction of a fried chicken Belgian waffle sandwich paired with a sweet coleslaw from Taste of Belgium.

Another new addition to this year's gala is the VIP ticket option. VIP admission offers a few extra perks such as included parking, a dedicated seating area, upgraded wine and the opportunity to chat with Harrison Wolfe.

Ticket prices range from $75 for young professionals, $100 for individuals and $125 for VIP access. Tickets are available at the North Market website.

Not only does the event give merchants a chance to share their delicacies with the public, it also touches on a less-tangible part of the market's mission, says Diane Warren, whose Katzinger's Little Deli opened at the market two weeks ago. "The Apron Gala gives us the opportunity to be a part of the North Market community," she says.
