4th of July essentials: 5 local products to beef up your barbecue

Gearing up for the Fourth of July weekend? Add a little extra patriotism to your backyard barbecue and pick up some of these Ohio-made products.

First things first: beer. This week, Marengo-based Hoof Hearted Brewing-slated to open an Italian Village brewpub later this year with A&R Creative-is distributing brand-new cans of their citrusy South of Eleven double IPA. Pick up a pack at The Hills Worthington, Weiland's Market or keep up with Hoof Hearted on Twitter; they're tweeting every time they drop off another case at a local retailer.

Forget the bland, cheapo dip.Dara Schwartz recently added two new flavors to her all-natural Darista Dips lineup. If you love red pepper hummus, go with the Que Bueno Piquillo, which gets a little smoke from paprika, a little heat from piquillo chili peppers and some sweetness from sherry vinegar. Zah-Mazing Za'atar is more herby and straightforward, made with its namesake spice blend and pomegranate molasses. Find them at Giant Eagle Market District or The Hills' Downtown and Worthington markets.

Of course, you'll need chips to go with all this dip. Skip the Ruffles and grab a bag of tortilla chips from Shagbark Seed & Mill-an organic, Athens-based mill that's crafting some of the best tortillas chips around. We love them for their simplicity (chips contain three ingredients: corn meal, sunflower oil and salt). They taste just like freshly milled corn. Find them at Whole Foods, The Hills and Weiland's.

No cookout is complete without juicy burgers charring on the grill. This year, make your patties from scratch using grass-fed ground beef from Ohio Pasture Proud. Their beef is a mixture of sirloin, chuck and brisket-meaning it's not as fatty as other ground beef, but it'll be plenty juicy. You can find the 2-year-old company's beef and pasture-raised chicken in freezer cases at The Hills Market, Weiland's Market and Huffman's Market.

What's more American than pie? Pie made by a local baker, of course. There's still time to pre-order sweet slices of goodness from two of our favorite bakeshops: Order by 10 p.m. July 1 for Dan the Baker's sour cherry streusel, strawberry balsamic pie and black raspberry streusel; or call over to Sassafras Bakery for patriotic pies like triple berry stars and stripes, walnut crumble, apple double crust and salty Ohio honey.
