Gallerie chef Bill Glover will cook at famed James Beard House

The James Beard Awards are to the food industry what the Oscars are to Hollywood. To be invited to the prestigious James Beard House-once home to the late cook and author-is a way of telling a chef that the foundation powers are watching you.

Columbus has yet to send a chef to New York City for this honor (though we do have a few Beard nominees in this town). But that will change on Friday, Sept. 11, when Gallerie Bar & Bistro chef Bill Glover takes over the Beard House kitchen for a six-course dinner highlighting the bounty of Ohio.

It's a huge honor, says Glover, adding he sees it as an opportunity to give long-overdue attention to Columbus' food scene that's often overshadowed by Cleveland and Cincinnati. "I was the invited person, but in my mind, it's an opportunity to shed light on what we are doing as a community," he says.

So for his all-Ohio dinner, Glover will feature products from purveyors and artisans he says are on par with some of the best in the industry. He'll be sourcing many of his proteins from James Anderson, the owner of Ray Ray's Hog Pit, who started a heritage-breed farm this past winter. Seventh Son Brewing will craft specialty beers. Watershed Distillery's entire spirits line will be featured in cocktails crafted by Travis Owens of Curio. Coffee will be sourced from One Line Coffee. And cheese will come from Blue Jacket Dairy in Bellefontaine.

"I want to bring the best and they represent that top-level standard," says Glover, who has been cooking in Columbus kitchens for two decades. He built a name for himself with his former Old North restaurant Sage American Bistro, a regular on the Crave 10 list until its closing in 2013. By then, Glover had made the move to the Hilton Downtown restaurant to open the Gallerie, a classical restaurant with an Ohio twist.

Collaboration is another big component Glover is excited to showcase at the James Beard dinner. For example, Anderson Farms chickens and hogs feature on the menu have been raised on spent grains from Watershed Distillery. And Seventh Son's custom beer for the evening has been aged in a Watershed bourbon barrel.

A limited number of tickets are available for the dinner. They go on sale Aug. 1 and are $170 per person. Tickets can be purchased here.
