Hands On: Owl Puppet

Olivera Bratich
Children can turn a lunch bag and construction paper into an adorable owl in no time.

The coming of autumn means longer hours of darkness for our favorite nocturnal animals, such as owls. Did you know that 12 different species of owls have been recorded in Ohio? While we all recognize their distinctive sounds—whoo whoo—the soft feathers of the owl allow them to fly almost silently through the night. See how silently you can fly your owl puppet through the house on a chilly fall evening!

  • Paper lunch bag
  • Light and dark brown paper
  • Black paper
  • Orange paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue

  1. Cut out these shapes from the colored paper: two light brown circles approximately 3 inches in diameter, two slightly smaller dark brown circles and two even smaller black circles—all for the eyes; one brown oval for the belly; two long triangles for wings; and one orange triangle for a beak.
  2. Lay the bag flat on the table with the bottom flap facing you. This will be the front of your owl. Flip it over and make a pencil mark where the lower edge of the bottom flap falls.
  3. Glue the wings to the back of the bag, lining up one long end of each triangle with the pencil mark.
  4. Flip the bag back over to glue the eyes to the bottom flap. Start with the largest circle, then add the smaller circle and finally the black paper for the pupil.
  5. Add a strip of glue to the straight edge of your orange triangle. Glue the triangle so that it hangs off the bottom flap, creating the beak.
  6. Lift the flap and glue the brown oval to the middle of the bag, so that the bottom of the flap hangs over it.
  7. Let your owl soar!
