The Challengers, a popular central Ohio band, will perform Friday, Aug. 22 on the Union County Courthouse lawn as part of the Uptown Friday Night Series. The event will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In addition, the promotion committee of the Uptown Renewal Team has planned several additional activities. Food and adult beverages will also be sold by local concessionaires.

The Marysville Public Library and Union County Humane Society are co-sponsoring "Chalk the Block" to celebrate back to school time. Participants in the sidewalk art contest can have fun, display their talents and win prizes. Registration is $5 for youths between the ages of 6 to 17 and $10 for adults. Participants receive supplies to decorate one sidewalk square.

The Challengers performed in 2006 at the August Uptown Friday Night Event. They perform a wide variety of music, with strong harmonies that help to enhance their musical styles, which include oldies, country, gospel, patriotic, and a capella numbers.

The group's versatility has enabled it to open for major artists in the entertainment industry, including Alabama, Ricky Skaggs, Crystal Gayle, B. J. Thomas, Marie Osmond, Tommy James, Gary Puckett, The Diamonds, 3 Dog Night, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Turtles, Peter Noone, Bobby Vee, Chubby Checker, Blood Sweat & Tears, Little River Band and many more.

The Challengers have been together for more than two decades.

They average more than 150 dates per year, traveling throughout the United States performing at state and county fairs, festivals, weddings, theaters and private corporate functions for companies.
