As part of a fall festival, Oakland Nursery will host the weigh-off that last year recorded the third-largest pumpkin in the world, weighing 1,631.5 pounds. It was entered by two brothers from New York.

"The growers are really personal people and it's amazing to see these huge pumpkins," said Sandy Warner, manager of Oakland Nursery.

The weigh-off starts at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The day includes several other events such as balloon artists, clowns, face painting, concessions and a showcase of animals from the Ohio Nature Education group.

The results of the weigh-off will be entered into an interactive Web site, BigPumpkins.com, that tracks similar weigh-offs held around the world, Warner said.

The Slate Ridge Bluegrass Band will perform from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and an Ohio Proud farmers market will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"It's a fun way to support the whole agricultural industry," Warner said. "These are a lot of smaller companies out there producing some great products."

About 15 Ohio vendors have committed to the market and will sell various items like ice cream, beef, potato chips and jellies, Warner said.

There also will be various sales inside the store, including a free six-pound bag of bird feed with the purchase of a bird feeder, Warner said. A trolley also will take people between Oakland Nursery and the Shoppes at River Ridge.
