Throw your wintertime blues to the wind and fly away with the butterflies at the Franklin Park Conservatory.

The annual Blooms & Butterflies event, in its 16th year, begins next week and brings the serene peace of the tropics along with the butterflies. Tiny, darting species and oversized, majestic ones will debut, fresh from their chrysalides, alongside tropical flowers and foliage.

Kickoff festivities planned for next Saturday, include the release of hundreds of butterflies and butterfly-themed crafts and a parade for kids. The exhibit runs through Sept. 7, and every day at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. a Conservatory guide greets visitors in the Pacific Island Water Garden to give a short presentation. Visitors can adopt a newly emerged butterfly for $5 and release it to flutter to the flora of the Pacific Island Water Garden for a drink of nectar.
