Celebrity Chef Event

Enjoy an evening of favorite foods prepared by some of Columbus' finest chefs and local celebrities. All to benefit the animals at the Capital Area Humane Society. The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel of extravagance and deception during the Prohibition is portrayed through expressive dance and elaborate sets in this world premier, the first full-length ballet by choreographer and Company dancer Jimmy Orrante. Art Therapy Class

Kya's Krusade, in partnership with Columbus Recreation and Parks, offers art therapy classes for children with physical disabilities and one sibling per student, ages 4-18. Celebrate the Earth

Make It and Take It: Seriously Cute Amigurumi

Join us for an afternoon of amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting animals toys and dolls. If you can't crochet, we'll teach you. Bring a size F/5 (4mm) or E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook. Columbus Parent Magazine EXPO

In its fifth year, the Columbus Parent Magazine EXPO will host thousands of young families at central Ohio's most family-friendly and fun outdoor facility. With tons of exhibits in one convenient area of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, this premier parenting event will make it easy for parents to discover hundreds of family-friendly resources in just one weekend. Join us and dance along with Laughing Pizza, play in a Top Trumps Tournament to win prizes, and every child under 12 gets a free round of mini-golf at Magic Mountain (while supplies last). Reminder about kindergarten registration!

Columbus City Schools encourages parents to register children now through May 29 for kindergarten for the 2009-2010 school year. Students must be age 5 or older on Sept. 30, 2009. Completion of an accredited kindergarten program is required in Ohio to begin first grade. Columbus City Schools offers full-day kindergarten at all elementary schools.

How to register:

A parent or guardian can register a child at the elementary school he or she will attend now through May 29 during school hours, 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Parents/Guardians can call the FACTLine at 614-221-3228 for the appropriate school.

The parent/guardian must provide a copy of the child's birth certificate; the child's social security card; proof of residence (utility bill, copy of lease/deed/statement from landlord, or paycheck); proof of required immunizations (diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chicken pox and hepatitis B); and documentation of custody, if appropriate (needed if student has different surname than the registering parent).

During the summer months, parents can register a child by contacting the Pupil Services Office at 614-365-5763 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for a list of enrollment sites. The office is located at 61 South Sixth Street.

The district provides assistance to families experiencing a variety of issues. Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact Columbus City Schools Pupil Services office at 614-365-5763 with any questions or concerns. Below are some examples of available help:

  • Temporary Housing/Homelessness: children experiencing homelessness or who are in a temporary housing situation (a hotel, shelter, awaiting foster care placement, staying with friends, family, etc.) can and should be registered for kindergarten. Contact: Project Connect at 614-365-5140 for assistance.
  • Language Obstacles: Children whose primary language spoken at home is not English should be evaluated by the English as a Second Language (ESL) Assessment Office; call 614-365-8802 to make an appointment.
  • Early Entrance: Early entrance registration is available pending results of an evaluation for children turning 5 years old by Dec. 31, 2009. Completed applications and accompanying paperwork must be turned in by May 15. The district offers
