In March, President Barack Obama signed an Executive Order to ensure there is always attention paid to how every government agency addresses the challenges confronted by women. The White House Council on Women and Girls will be chaired by Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, with Public Liaison Tina Tchen serving as Executive Director. It began its work by asking each agency to analyze their current status and ensure that they are focused internally and externally on women.

Internally, I am cringing that my extraordinarily bright, creative and talented daughter worked so hard to perfect something called a "herke." Externally, I am slapping on a smile and going to the "mothers' meeting" to discuss "spankies." Really.

Malia and Sasha's father is headed in the right direction. He knows and has acted upon the need to focus attention on how we address women in this country. We can only hope it will trickle down through every office and every workplace. What he doesn't yet realize is that it's a minefield where clothing items known as "spankies" continue to play an enormous part in a future woman's life.
