Mohican State Park, Loudonville
Columbus Outdoor Pursuits will lead a 12-mile hike through this beautiful wilderness about an hour north of the city. The hike is free.

Hocking Hills Canopy Tours, Rockbridge
Professionals will teach you a unique technique to ascend and descend tall trees. Don't worry: You're secured to a climbing rope. Cost is $75.
Intro to Backpacking

Clintonville Outfitters, Clintonville
Every Tuesday evening, this outdoor shop drops science about various aspects of trail life. Don't miss this great introduction to the popular hobby. Classes are free.
Putting Down Roots

Franklin Park Conservatory, Near East Side
The American Community Garden Association will host its 30th-annual conference, a comprehensive slate of programs for organizing and growing a garden. Registration starts at $200.
8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8
Blendon Woods Metro Park, Westerville
Join one of Columbus Audubon's seasoned birders in search of the waterfowl, song birds and backyard species that frequent this lovely preserve. Audubon walks are free.
10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8
Dawes Arboretum, Newark
A horticulturalist will lead a group through the preserve, giving tips to identify native plants and trees. The two-hour class costs $12.
Friday-Sunday, Aug. 21-23
Lake Hope State Park, McArthur
The Outdoor Source, a popular local retailer, will lead a weekend camping trip to this great park in southeastern Ohio. The trip costs $90.
Appalachian Adventure Women's Outdoor Weekend
Friday-Monday, Sept. 4-7
Burr Oak State Park, Glouster
Hocking Hills adventure company Touch the Earth will introduce women to the outdoors during a retreat with educational seminars, activities and live music. The weekend costs $375.
Flaming Torchlight Tour
7 p.m. Saturday, July 25
Hocking Valley Canoe Livery, Logan
The Hocking River comes alive under a glowing flame attached to your bow during this nighttime excursion. The trip includes gear, snacks and live entertainment and costs $42 per couple.
