Beaches are in short supply around here, but the love for sand volleyball lives on at bars, parks and universities. The dog days of summer are about to explode in Central Ohio with leagues, pick-up games and tournaments. If you're looking to hit the sand, here are some places to serve, set and spike.

Alum Creek State Park

At the southernmost end of the giant reservoir, you'll find the most authentic beach volleyball experience - namely, because you're playing on an actual beach. The two courts are first come, first served, and the park closes at dusk. Showers and a concession stand are located on site.

Flannagan's Dublin

The 13 courts at this sandy oasis are usually in use by numerous co-ed rec leagues that run Sunday through Thursday. Registration for a six-week fall session remains open until Sept. 24 and costs $195 per team. If you're looking to just dip in a toe, try the Friday night mixer, when singles can play for $7.

Fred Beekman Park

Within Ohio State's extensive labyrinth of fields, diamonds, pitches and paths on West Campus are four volleyball courts. Summer intramural leagues run at 7 and 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but it's fairly open other times with most students away. OSU also maintains courts behind Canfield Hall on South Campus and on Woodruff Avenue, just west of High Street.

This popular watering hole keeps busy inside and out with regular events, live music, cornhole and two spots for sand action. Saturday is pick-up day, an informal setting to hit alone or with a few friends. Limited Sunday night spaces are available in a co-ed rec league that started July 20. Cost is $300 per team.

Ten Pin Alley & Spike's

5499 Constitution Blvd., Hilliard

Ten Pin brings together bowling and sand volleyball, along with a pub, restaurant and arcade. For a pick-up volley, try weekends during the daytime and Monday nights. The spot also offers regular tournaments, including a friendly Leukemia & Lymphoma Society benefit Aug. 1 that costs $120 per team. The third session of the bar's co-ed rec league remains open until Sept. 19. It runs six weeks and costs $175.
