Alive & Unedited: C.J. Townsend
I'm originally from Youngstown. I moved here when I was about five. I'm glad it happened. It's weird: A lot of the DJs and party promoters here are also from Youngstown.
About a year and a half ago, someone asked me to play music off my iPod at Bento Go Go. Everyone liked it, so I did it for six months as something to do that was fun. That slowly, gradually transformed into DJing for real.
My mind has to be constantly occupied. My worst habit is tapping things. I don't do it all the time. I just do it when it's completely silent. Also, I always flush the toilet twice.
The key to a good dance party is lots of girls. Dudes don't really like to dance. The more girls you have, the better your dance floor. The music can be whatever, honestly. I play dance music for the most part, but sometimes I'll just play whatever comes into my mind.
The parties in Columbus are a lot wilder than you would think a party in New York or Chicago would be. I don't think people realize that the bars here are really big compared to bars in other cities. If we pack a bar here, it's insane. When you go to New York City, it's the size of a living room.
I don't really prepare for sets. I just go. I try to have every song that I like in different genres ready. I have a folder called "Current" that has whatever I like that's come out this month. You have to look at the crowd and determine what they would like the most.
My biggest pet peeve is requests. If you want a request, get an iPod. One time, somebody requested Buckcherry from me. I don't look like a Buckcherry fan. I don't even look like I would maybe have Buckcherry on my iPod.
A good piece of advice I've gotten recently is that if you party the hardest, make sure it's known that you party the hardest. That way people want to come party with you. Ahmed from Sinkane told me that. He gives some good advice.
Three things I can't live without are SportsCenter, cheeseburgers and my BlackBerry.
Something else I'm good at is cooking eggs. I'm a pretty mean scrambler. I eat eggs every morning.
The first thing I'd do with $1 million is buy a house.
