The Statue

The 22-foot-tall statue that welcomes guests to Summer Haven is a representation of an unknown WWI soldier crafted by self-taught carver Brice Baughman. For years, it stood among statues of presidents at Baughman Park in Frazeysburg. Roughly 7,000 people attended its dedication in August 1921, and according to research Keegan has done, it was said to be the artist's favorite statue. In 2008, when someone purchased the park and auctioned off the statues, Keegan wanted one to preserve herself. "We really felt that in order to keep some of the history of Frazeysburg, where Brice Baughman was from, we needed to buy a statue," she said. George Washington was fabulous, she jokes, but perhaps a little highbrow for Summer Haven.
