Q&A: PR maven Alexandra Kelley
Alexandra Kelley shows her state pride with a small, Ohio-shaped necklace - and her deep affection for Columbus with pretty much everything else she does. The local publicist known for pro-bono, pro-Columbus promotion shared more about repping her hometown.
I grew up all over the country , but Columbus is the only place that's ever felt like home . I moved here from Boston in 1990, and before that lived a whole bunch of places. I was born in Houston. I went to college in Virginia and missed Columbus so much that I came back.
Three things I can't live without are Goodale Park, WCBE and scarves.
I've been doing public relations for about 14 years now . I've been writing my whole life, and I'm endlessly fascinated with people. I'm constantly asking questions, probably inquisitive to a fault. It seemed a natural field for me to fall into.
A year and a half ago, I de cided to start my own business . I have a lot of clients in Columbus and some who are not in Ohio that are more corporate, and they really keep the lights on for me. That work enables me to do my community work. To have the opportunity to promote Columbus, which is my true passion, is a dream come true.
The best advice I've ever received is that writers write. That was given to me by my fiance, Kevin Fox, right around the time that I went into business for myself and started my own blog. I was just feeling a little apprehensive about everything, and he said the most simple thing.
I do a lot of things on a volunteer basis because I believe so strongly in it. I'm an organizer of Pecha Kucha. I'm the founder and manager of the Goodale Park Music Series. I sit on the board of the Short North Foundation and the Short North Civic Association. There's a bunch of pro-bono PR that I do for certain things.
My favorite thing about Columbus is that there's a genuine spirit here. There's a genuine interest in people and art and music. It's so culturally rich that it just can't be copied. I've lived in 10 states, and I have never experienced a city as grounded and distinct as Columbus.
Something people might not know about me is that I speak Spanish. Growing up, I spent my summers in Madrid studying and working. I have a degree in Spanish in addition to communications.
