Winter Skin Tips

Exfoliation helps to protect and moisturize dry winter skin. Try the Ole Henriksen Sugar Glow Face scrub, or make your own at home.

Recently, I was asked how to protect one's face in cold weather. The woman who asked said she knew of someone who applies Vaseline to her face before going outside. Seriously. Now, although that might keep the face moisturized, I'm guessing the woman's friends ditch her until June. There are better ways to protect skin. Here are my tips:

  • Exfoliate your face two or three times a week. I like the Ole Henriksen Sugar Glow Face Scrub ($38) at Sephora, but you don't need an expensive scrub. You can easily make one yourself. Mix two parts brown sugar to one part olive oil (1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/8 cup of olive oil work well) and lather up. The sugar exfoliates, and the oil moisturizes.
  • Moisturize more often. Consider applying moisturizer in the morning and at night rather than just once a day. And moisturize right after you wash your face - when pores are open and can absorb the most moisture.
  • Love your lips. Your smackers need to be exfoliated, too. I like Lush Bon Bon lip scrub ($8.95 from Lush Cosmetics at Macy's at Tuttle Crossing), but you can also make your own: Mix 1 tablespoon of plain white sugar with a few drops of honey and olive oil, then scrub-a-dub-dub. Apply Vaseline (only if you're going to bed) or lip balm. And keep the balm handy - at your desk, in your car - to apply it throughout the day.
