Q&A: Arena Grand manager Kara Bodle

Staff Writer

Kara Bodle has landed jobs outside of movie theaters - but she always seems to find her way back into one. The general manager of the Arena Grand movie theater shared more about life behind the projector.

I never really watched movies when I was younger. We lived kind of in the middle of nowhere, out in the country. We got three TV stations - only two of which came in, especially if the weather was bad. We didn't have a VCR until about the time I was 16.

The first movie I remember watching in the theater was "Return of the Jedi." It was with my dad and my cousins. I was the only girl that went - and I loved it.

When you're 16, you've got to go get a job. That's just a rule, so I went around and applied. I got a job at a movie theater and never really left.

I was a general manager at the theater in the Indian Mound Mall in Heath. I started when I was 16 years old and ended up working there 13-and-a-half years. I finally got my master's, came to Columbus to be an HR director and ended up as a GM of a theater.

I love the industry. It's one of those things that gets in your blood, and you just can't help yourself. First and foremost, I love movies. There's always a level of excitement and energy in the air when you come into a theater.

For me, a great movie has a great story. I'm not as concerned with headliners, as far as who is cast or who directs it. If it's really well-written and really moves well, I'll watch a movie about anything. There's nothing worse than a movie that drags.

Three things I can't live without are entertainment, my friends and a reason to laugh every day.

The best advice I've ever received is that you can always be a better you, but you'll never be better than anyone else.

Something about me that people might not know is that I was the lead singer in a band for seven years. It was in Newark. It started out large and went down to almost an acoustic duo type of thing. I'm still a pretty powerful car singer.

If I could have anyone play me in a movie, it would be Sandra Bullock.
