Baseball: Clippers season preview

Columbus Alive

Fresh off winning last season's triple-A national championship, the Columbus Clippers open their season Saturday afternoon against in-state rivals the Toledo Mud Hens.

OK, enough with all the fancy baseball talk. What you really want to know is what's going on with the food, drink and freebies, right?

Here are a few reasons to hit Huntington Park this season, even if the on-field action normally puts you to sleep before the seventh-inning stretch.

• General admission tickets for $6

When the front office moved the team from Franklinton to the Arena District, they promised to transport the homey, low-budget vibe that characterized the Coop. So far, they've kept their word - admission is cheap. General admission tickets include access to a grassy outfield knoll where fans can spread out on a blanket and snag a few home run balls. It's the best viewing area in Columbus sports.

• The Hall of Fame Bar

Fans can venture into the second floor of the brick building in left field and enjoy one of the best sports bars in town. In addition to its fantastic views, this airy watering hole is plastered with memorabilia from a history of Columbus baseball that reaches back to the 1800s. Full food and drink menus round out this perfect escape from day-game sunburn.

Local food and drink

The most unique thing you can find at most ballparks is a bag of Twizzlers, but the Hunt highlights some of the city's best food and drink. Fifty-cent wings are available every Wednesday from the Rooster's atop the left-field building, and City Barbeque offers $1 bones every Tuesday at its right-field stand. To wash them down, find the two Columbus Brewing Company taps in the cart by Section 24.

• Dime-A-Dog Night

Nothing - I repeat, nothing - says Columbus baseball like a steamy sack of hot dogs purchased with the change under your car's floor mat. The proud tradition of selling 10-cent hot dogs continues on April 25, May 23, June 20, July 18 and Aug. 22.
