Columbus Comedy Festival at Wild Goose

When Wild Goose Creative puts on its second-annual Columbus Comedy Festival - well, it's technically the third, counting a show last September called Comedy Festival 1.5 - they'll be packing more comedy into less time.

After last year, organizers realized that four hours of comedy each night is a bit too much for both the audience and the performers. So this time around the nightly schedule will be shortened to three hours.

"We learned to set a limit, and we're really going for it this time, trying to create smaller blocks of [acts]," said Columbus Comedy Festival organizer and Wild Goose co-founder Nick Dekker.

Cutting an hour doesn't mean less comedy, though. Sets will be shortened only a few minutes each, so the audience will be hit with plenty of quick-fire bits - similar to the format of Wild Goose's weekly Monday Night Live, only with more performers and acts. And, with any luck, more laughs.

Each night's lineup includes everything from stand-up and sketch comedy to improv, variety and video segments. This year there's even a comic magician, Michael Kent.

As with previous festivals, everything kicks off Thursday with the popular Comedy Revolver showcase.

Part stand-up and part improv, the roast-like jabs delivered by a panel of comedians will serve as the perfect opening for the festival - especially because the group includes sharp-witted, experienced funnymen Jeff Burgstrom, Travis Hoewischer, Anthony O'Connell, Chris Coen and Cole Downs.

On Friday and Saturday, eight stand-up acts will go on stage between the sketch comedy groups, improv teams and video comedy segments. That tactic should help break things up and keep the pace exciting, Dekker said.

The Winnie Cooper Project will perform its '90s rap-jam-band stylings on Saturday night, and two of the city's favorite street-eats carts, Rad Dog and Late Night Slice, will serve their delicious fare.
