As excitement builds nationwide for growing backyard food, many green thumbs have turned to heirloom plants. In addition to offering terrific taste, these rare, older plant varieties revive a form of living history.

No one knows more about this kind of stuff than the interpreters at Slate Run Living Historical Farm, who work the land and raise livestock like it's 1880. During two presentations this weekend, they'll teach about preserving and cultivating antique seeds.

If the weather's nice, they'll even let you plant a few.
