First look: Milestone 229

Shelley Mann, Columbus Alive

Stopped into Milestone 229, the new restaurant on the Scioto Mile, for a preview lunch this week and was duly impressed. First things first, how adorable is this calamari appetizer, served with chopsticks and spillng out of a Chinese takeout container? Saw a bunch of people ordering these.

The food's great, but I think most people are going to be more blown away by the looks. The stunning circular restaurant has a sleek open kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows offering a look onto the Scioto River.

Outside, plenty of patio seating and an outdoor bar mean more opportunities to gaze out onto the river, not to mention the impressive fountains that are the centerpiece of the Scioto revitalization project.

A quick look at the rest of my lunch:

The Cucumber Refresher ($3), a (non-alcoholic) cucumber and honey lemonade

Skillet Mac n Cheese starter ($7.25), with bacon, diced tomatoes and scallions. OMG, good.

The soup of the day ($4.95), a watermelon gazpacho with avocado, cilantro and chunks of shrimp

229 House Salad ($5.95): Mixed field greens with roasted red peppers, orange segments, goat cheese and sourdough croutons in a citrus vinaigrette

Definitely looking forward to drinks on the patio and checking out more of the menu.
