Ohio State Fair food

Shelley Mann, Columbus Alive

The Ohio State Fair is in full swing, and I'm not going to lie -- I adore the fair. And I adore this picture of me eating deep-fried s'mores, snapped by the awesome Jodi Miller at last year's fair.

I shared my picks for the top 5 bad-for-you fair foods in this week's Alive, and here's a look at all the new-for-this-year food offerings:

Fried Kool-Aid: A special batter made with flour and Cherry Kool-Aid is deep-fried. Krispy Kreme Burger: A cheeseburger served between two glazed donuts. OMG. Pork Parfait: Shredded pork, mashed potatoes and BBQ sauce layered in a parfait cup and topped with a cherry tomato. Frozen Key Lime Pie on a Stick: This favorite Key West dessert sounds pretty delicious. Honey Caramel Ice Cream: The winning flavor of an ice cream flavor contest from Ohio Farm Bureau and Velvet Ice Cream, submitted by eighth-grader Alex Grooms

Also new this year: booze! Yes, for the first time Ohio State Fair-goers can indulge in Ohio-made beers and wines. It'll make deep-fried fair food taste so much better.

Apparently the fair folks caught wind of my love for the fair, because this year I was asked to help judge not one, but two pork-centered food contests. At noon Saturday, July 30, I'll be weighing in on the main dishes competing in the Great Sugardale Bac-On. And on Tuesday, Aug. 2, I'll be judging the dishes in the ribs and pulled pork categories at the Ohio State Fair Rib-Off. Oh boy.
