Happy Hour at G. Michael's
Columbus has a ton of great happy hour deals, but I think I'm ready to declare that G. Michael's offers the very best bargains for foodies. The happy hour deal, running from 4:30-7 p.m. Monday-Friday in the bar area, is $5 martinis, $3 draft beers, $4 glasses of house wine, and the kicker--$6 small plates from 5-7. And you're not going to find better a better bar snack than the small plates at G. Michael's. While researching for my Cheap Eats column in today's Dispatch, I tried two martinis (the Upper West Side, with Bulleit, grenadine and bitters, is great) and several small plates to share. Here's what I got:
Pan Roasted Wild Boar Sausage with blackeyed pea, pulled pork and hominy succotash, and sweet and sour macerated peaches (discounted from $10)
PEI Mussels in hot Italian sausage, yellow tomato and roasted garlic broth (discounted from $8)
Coconut Marinated Grilled Watermelon with arugula salad, lime dressing and rum-candied peanuts (discounted from $8)
Each of these plates was like a mini-masterpiece. Chef David Tetzloff obviously puts just as much care into each of his small plates as he does his amazing entrees, and that's what sets this happy hour apart from others in the city. Do yourself a favor and check it out soon. The G. Michael's menu changes often, but here were the other small plate choices at my recent visit:
Calamari Fritti with graham cracker dusting, smoked red onion aioli and lemon wedges
G. Michael's Corn on the Cob grilled with lime chipotle aioli, parmesan and maple syrup
Fried Green Tomatoes with bacon and truffled egg salad, grilled napa cabbage and shaved gruyere
Shrimp & Grits with andouille sausage and country ham served in buttery tomato-scallion broth
Cold Appetizer Trio with Lowcountry pimento cheese, smoked trout pate and house-made spicy bread and butter pickles
