Creating Columbus: 200 Arts and Cultural Moments that Shaped the City's History

John Ross, Columbus Alive

Columbus has come a long way from the place known in 1812 as the "High Banks opposite Franklinton at the Forks of the Scioto known as Wolf's Ridge."

The city grew larger and more complex in the last 200 years, but it also became a nexus of education, commerce, transportation, government, art, music, food and culture. In short, Ohio's capital became a city with a million stories.

To celebrate the Columbus Bicentennial, we offer a list of 200 arts and cultural moments that honed the city into such a dynamic place to live, work, play, watch, experience and enjoy.

Some entries are monumental events - like the first classes at Ohio State University or the construction of Union Station. Others are simply intriguing slices of life - like when Clarence Darrow got too drunk to take the state bar exam or Elvis Costello started a brawl at the Holiday Inn.

Taken together, they form a greater picture, a mosaic of a truly wonderful town.

Happy birthday, Columbus.
