City: New ReStore opens on West Side

John Ross, Columbus Alive

Last week, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus opened a ReStore on the West Side, providing a second place to find great deals on new and used home goods and building supplies. Like the flagship store in Westerville, ReStore West helps fund Habitat's mission to build affordable housing for low-income families.

A ReStore is like a thrift shop for your house. If you've never been to one, here are some tips for getting the most out of your visit.

Get creative.

The ReStore offers diverse products, but it's not nearly as comprehensive as a big-box home-improvement store You'll need an eye for making things work. For example, I bought six close-out carpet squares and taped them together to make a rug. Try to find items that could be transformed with paint, stain, sanding or cleaning.

Return often.

Habitat gets donations from individual remodelers, construction companies and big-box stores, which funnel a somewhat random stream of new and used goods throughout the year. Don't give up if you can't find an ideal item the first time out. Calling ahead can give you an idea of what's in stock.

Make a list of what you need.

The ReStore is great for those undertaking a handful of projects. You might find a faucet on one visit, then return to discover great ceramic tiles. If you keep a list, you can knock out things as you go.

Donate old items when you visit.

During a home-improvement project, unwanted items take up space and don't always fit in the trash can. Recycle them. The ReStore website lists a wide range of acceptable products. Bring smaller items to the store, or schedule a pick-up for larger ones. Donations are tax deductible.
