Fourth Festivities

Jenny Rogers

Whether you're inclined to brave the Red, White & Boom crowd or would rather keep it low-key, there are plenty ways to get in on Independence Day festivities this weekend. Here are the highlights:

For big-time revelers: Red, White & Boom

When: July 3

Where: Downtown Columbus

What to expect: Central Ohio's largest celebration is all about big crowds and even bigger fireworks. Head down soon to nab a premier watching spot (the fireworks launch near Veterans Memorial), or jump on a COTA bus to avoid traffic and parking hassles. Bus schedules can be found here.

For music-lovers: Central Ohio Symphony's July 4th Concert

When: July 4, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Ohio Wesleyan University

What to expect: The Central Ohio Symphony will perform Broadway and film favorites and patriotic tunes outdoors at Philips Glen in downtown Delaware. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket-and a picnic meal-and stay after the performance for Delaware's fireworks celebration.

For history buffs: The Glorious Fourth

When: July 4, noon

Where: Ohio History Center's Ohio Village

What to expect: From storytelling, ice-cream sampling and a pie-eating contest to a parade and musical performances, the Fourth celebration at Ohio Village is old-school fun from start to finish. Make sure to check out the Ohio Village Muffins vintage baseball game at 2 p.m.

For those in need of a laugh: Doo Dah Parade

When: July 4, noon

Where: High Street in the Short North

What to expect: A parade of anything and everything, from irreverent Lady Liberties to barely clothed acrobats. Expect the unexpected.
