The New Albany Symphony Orchestra is again hosting its popular annual Student Concerto Competition and the deadline to enter is this Friday, Oct. 3.

There are two divisions for the competition -vocal and instrumental - and applicants must be 19 or younger as of June 1, 2015, and have not yet graduated from high school.

The 2014-2015 Season Student Concerto Competition will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Graves Piano Recital Hall, 5298 Karl Road in Columbus. There is a $40 application fee.

Each applicant must provide their own accompanist, and should perform one movement from a concerto from the orchestral repertoire. The concerto must be a public domain work. Instrumental concertos should be less than 12 minutes in length.

Vocal performers should choose a piece from the vocal orchestral repertoire, including classical, Broadway, or opera, with preference given to a work from the Great American Songbook. Students should not compete with concertos which have been performed by NASO the previous two seasons. (Detailed information and an online application form are available at, under "COMPETITION.")

First- and second-place winners in each category will be awarded prize money. First place will receive $200 and second place will receive $100. The first-place winners will also perform this season at a NASO concert at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts: The instrumental winner will perform at the "Holiday Spectacular" concert on Dec. 21, 2014, and the vocal winner will perform at the NASO concert on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015.
