Evergreen Flower Co. brings organic floral design to Columbus

Heather Edgar has quite the story.

The owner of Evergreen Flower Co. was studying music education at Ohio State when now husband Loftur, studying abroad in the States, walked into her life. Inspired by dreams of traveling the world, she changed her major to international studies and eventually headed to Iceland to visit her guy.

While there, she met Ragnhildur Fjeldsted, a flower-shop owner who would become her mentor in floral design.

"I had always been interested in art and design and that kind of thing," Edgar says. "And I just fell in love with floral design. This happened all by accident!"

Upon returning to the states, she studied the basics of floral design at the David Curtis School of Floral Design. Up first: creating the gorgeous bouquets for her own July wedding.

Now based out of her home in Columbus, Edgar creates wild, organic, lush bouquets with lots of texture. "I love garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, interesting foliage, weeping eucalyptus … stuff with a lot of layers," she says. It's a loosely styled look that's more classic than contemporary, although Edgar's approach to weddings is anything but traditional.

"Be open-minded," says Edgar, giving advice to future brides. "You can do so much with flowers … it doesn't have to be a round, tightly packed bouquet. It can be so much more."
