Birders and other wildlife enthusiasts are invited to Hogback Ridge Preserve in Delaware County to celebrate the return of ospreys to Ohio.
The birds, which migrate to South America for winter, return to Ohio each spring to nest. Ospreys did not nest in Ohio for more than 75 years because of poor environmental conditions. Volunteers and wildlife professionals initiated a program in 1996 to reestablish habitats for them.
Visitors to the preserve can hear the story of the osprey reintroduction during the celebration, which will take place from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 12. The free event also will include children's crafts and refreshments.
The preserve, which is part of the Preservation Parks of Delaware County system, is located at 2656 Hogback Road, Sunbury 43074. For more information, visit www.preservationparks.com.
