How to stay busy over Labor Day weekend
There are ton of events in September. In addition to our Top 5 eventpicksthis month, we've rounded up a few things to see and do from Wednesday through Monday. Have a happy Labor Day weekend, Columbus.
Wednesday, Sept. 2 – "Cincinnati Goddamn" at Wexner Center
On Wednesday, the Wexner Center will host the Columbus premiere of "Cincinnati Goddamn," a documentary that traces the aftermath following the deaths of 15 African American men at the hands of Cincinnati police from 1995 to 2001. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with co-directors April Martin and Paul Hill, activist Iris Roley and Professor Rhonda Y. Williams.
In his preview of the documentary for this month's issue, Columbus Monthly writer Joel Oliphint writes:
Considering the interviews in "Cincinnati Goddamn" take place between 2001 and 2006, the film is a devastatingly accurate foreshadowing of what was to come in other American cities. Historian Manning Marable, who died in 2011, gives a particularly prescient analysis toward the end of the film.
"I think that Cincinnati's 2001 uprising is a harbinger of the future," Marable says in the film. "We should transform the relationship between the police and the community."
The discussion will no doubt include the recent killing of Samuel DuBose, an unarmed black motorist, by a University of Cincinnati police officer during a traffic stop. Worth reading is The New Yorker's story on DuBose's death here.
Admission to Wednesday's screening and panel discussion is free. You can watch the "Cincinnati Goddamn" trailer below.
