NEW YORK (AP) — Comedian Steve Rannazzisi, who is scheduled to have a stand-up special on Comedy Central this weekend, says he lied about working in New York City's World Trade Center when terrorists attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

Rannazzisi said he didn't know why he told the story, which he called "a mistake that I deeply regret and for which apologies may still not be enough."

Comedy Central said it just learned about the falsehood this week and is determining whether to move forward with Saturday's special, called "Breaking Dad." Rannazzisi appears in an FXX series "The League."

His falsehood was first reported Wednesday in The New York Times.
