If you're on social media, you're likely to be inundated with photos of fluffballs in honor of National Puppy Day today.

National Puppy Day, which started in 2006, is the brainchild of Colleen Paige, who bills herself as a celebrity pet and home lifestyle expert and author. Paige started the effort to raise awareness of both pet adoption and puppy mills.

If you're considering adding a four-legged friend to your family, do your homework. Not all breeds are right for families, or with houses that already have a dog or cat.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals offers some general pet adoption tips on its website.

The American Kennel Club offers guidance on deciding whether a dog is right for your family and, if so, how to choose a breed, bring it home and keep it healthy.
