Writers Morrison, Coates and Sanchez talk art, Orlando, Ali
NEW YORK (AP) — The Broadway audience was on its feet. Not for "Hamilton" or "The Humans," but for a trio of celebrated writers: Toni Morrison, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sonia Sanchez.
Wednesday night's gathering at the Ambassador Theatre was called "Art and Social Justice," and Sanchez led a warm and pointed discussion about everything from the Orlando shootings to Muhammad Ali. The three also shared stories about their development as writers, their influences and their roles as critics of the status quo.
Sanchez, the poet, educator and activist, is the in-house poet laureate of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, which sponsored the event. Also appearing was the folk and blues artist Toshi Reagon, who performed before and after the main program.
